Many women stay silent because they are told that violence at home is a private family matter. It is not. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 gives women living in a shared household clear legal protection.

What counts as domestic violence?

The law covers physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal and emotional abuse (insults, threats, humiliation) and economic abuse — for example, taking away a woman’s salary or denying money for basic needs. Harassment for dowry is also covered.

What can a woman ask the court for?

  • Protection order — stops the abuser from committing violence or contacting her.
  • Residence order — she cannot be thrown out of the shared home.
  • Monetary relief — maintenance and payment for losses or medical costs.
  • Custody order — temporary custody of children.
  • Compensation for injuries and mental distress.

Where to go

A woman can approach the Protection Officer of her district, a registered service provider, the police, or directly the Magistrate’s court. In an emergency, call 112 or the Women Helpline 181. Free legal aid is available through the District Legal Services Authority.
