Fear of court fees and lawyers stops many women from seeking justice. Under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the government provides free legal aid — a lawyer, help with drafting, and court fees — to eligible people.
Who is eligible?
The Act lists groups who can get free legal services. They include all women and children, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, victims of trafficking, persons with disabilities, people in custody, victims of disasters, industrial workmen, and people whose income is below the limit fixed by the state.
Where to apply
- District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) — at the district court.
- Taluka / Tehsil Legal Services Committee — at the tehsil court.
- NALSA helpline 15100 for information.
A simple written application with your name, address and the problem is enough to start.
Lok Adalat
Many disputes — family matters, money recovery, motor accident claims — can be settled quickly and without fees at a Lok Adalat. Its decision is final and binding.
Legal awareness camps
Human Rights & Women Safety Trust holds legal awareness camps that explain these rights in simple language and help women reach the legal-aid office.
